About SENSE

The SENSE Project is an Erasmus+ Sport initiative that fosters active lifestyles and social inclusion for individuals with visual impairments (VI). With over 30 million visually impaired individuals living in Europe, this demographic often faces unique barriers to physical activity and integration, including stigma, structural inaccessibility, and health challenges.

SENSE recognizes these challenges and aims to address them through adaptive martial arts training, offering a dual benefit of physical fitness and mental well-being. By integrating inclusive practices and advanced techniques, the project leverages martial arts to empower individuals with VI, helping them overcome isolation, improve physical health, and build confidence. Through international collaboration and sharing best practices, SENSE strives to enhance the accessibility and quality of sports programs across Europe.

Importance of Inclusive Martial Arts

Inclusive martial arts training holds transformative potential for visually impaired individuals. Martial arts go beyond physical training by offering a holistic approach to personal development, combining physical fitness with mental and emotional growth.

Participation in martial arts fosters:

  • Physical well-being: Improves strength and muscle, coordination, balance, weight management and overall fitness.
  • Mental health: Enhanced focus, self-esteem, stress relief, and emotional resilience.
  • Social integration: Opportunities for connection, teamwork, and community building.

Addressing the unique challenges faced by visually impaired individuals, inclusive martial arts create a platform where all participants can thrive. Through adaptive techniques and an emphasis on mindfulness, martial arts offer a pathway to empowerment, allowing individuals with VI to lead healthier, more connected lives.
